Independence Day 2012
With the Colorado wildfires ravaging our state, there will be no grandiose display of fireworks to help us celebrate the day we Americans declared our independence. To some, especially children, it’s a little like Christmas without the tree or gifts. It just doesn’t feel complete, it doesn’t feel right.
My son is now two years old and it makes me very sad that he will not see the sky light up with celebration on our Day of Independence. I imagine it would have been amazing to simply sit and watch him eagerly waiting for the next big “boom”. Maybe next year.
Now imagine being a father, mother, brother, sister, grandparent, etc. of a child signing up today, to protect our Declaration of Independence that was signed 236 years ago on July 4th, 1776.
While we may celebrate and enjoy a mid-week day off of work, there are many who shed tears of pride for loved ones who stepped up and volunteered to put their life on hold and risk everything to insure we will have another July 4th. Year after year, generation after generation.
To all the men and women who have, and will make July 4th a day to celebrate, thank you for your sacrifice and your service.
